Mirror wills

Two wills, one shared plan.

Mirror wills are two separate wills with broadly corresponding terms, often chosen by couples who want to look after each other and then their family.

Clear Will Writing is a specialist will-writing service and is not a firm of solicitors.

Start Your Enquiry

Tell us the basics about mirror wills. We'll contact you to discuss what you need.

Please do not include detailed health, disability or capacity information, banking details or confidential will instructions in this initial enquiry.

No obligation. We'll explain the next step before you decide whether to proceed.

01 / Overview

What is a mirror will?

Each partner has their own will. The terms are usually similar: for example, each person leaves their estate to the other, and then to the same children or chosen beneficiaries.

Because they are two separate documents, either person can generally change their own will later. That is worth understanding before you decide, and we will explain it plainly.

Mirror wills are not right for everyone, particularly where there are children from earlier relationships or other circumstances needing more careful thought. We will say so where we think another approach may fit better.

What we will discuss

  • Who each of you wants to benefit first
  • What happens if you both die together
  • Executors and replacement executors
  • Guardians for minor children
  • Whether a trust provision may be relevant

02 / Who this can suit

Common reasons people get in touch.

Married or civil partners

You want to provide for each other first, then for your family.

Cohabiting couples

Unmarried partners do not automatically inherit from one another, so a will matters.

Parents of young children

You want to name the same guardians and set out how your children are provided for.
